Champion California Chrome (3/5) is back in action against six rivals as the big horse makes his final start in preparation for the Breeders’ Cup Classic Saturday, October 1 at Santa Anita.
California Chrome draws the rail post just as the five year-old superstar did while dominating the Grade 1 Pacific Classic in August. He'll also face a familiar foe in Dortmund (3/1), who California Chrome defeated narrowly in the the San Diego Handicap and comfortably in the the Pacific Classic. The mile and one eighth distance of the Awesome Again figures to level the playing field for Dortmund, who has an outside chance of pulling the upset if things break just right.
Hoppertunity (7/1) should be rolling late, but will have to be on top of his game to threaten the top two. The Bob Baffert trainee has proven a top-class horse, but would likely need the race to fall apart to find the winner's circle. Still, the veteran closer looms a logical choice to finish third and could crash the exacta.
