Bet on the Summertime Oaks
The Summertime Oaks, previously known as the American Oaks Invitational, is a mid-year turf race for three-year-old fillies run at a mile and a quarter. Though it has only been run since 2002, it has gained a reputation as a world-class race and typically draws not only some of the best up and coming turf fillies in the country, but in the world. It was run at Santa Anita for the first time in 2014 after being previously run at the now defunct Hollywood Park.

2016 Summertime Oaks Contenders
The field has been set for the 2016 edition of the Summertime Oaks and six rivals are scheduled to line up to try to dethrone champion Songbird as she puts her undefeated streak on the line. The dark bay filly is scheduled to head to the East Coast after this race and could potentially face male rivals later in the year.
Songbird, the overwhelming favorite at odds of 1-5 for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, is undefeated and untested from seven starts. As a juvenile, she went four for four and put the exclamation point on her Eclipse Award winning season with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). After three victories as a three-year-old, she was on target for the Kentucky Oaks (G1) but was forced to miss the race when she lost training due to a fever. She has been training strongly for her return to the races and will have her regular rider, Mike Smith, aboard.
Of the six fillies scheduled to face Songbird, trainer Philip d’Amato will saddle three of them – Bellamentary, Coppa and Sutton’s Smile. Coppa is undefeated from two starts and will be stepping up to stakes competition for the first time. Both starts have come sprinting so in addition to a class test, she will also have to answer the question of whether or not she has any distance limitations.
Here is the field for the Summertime Oaks along with morning line odds.
1. That’s a Lady, 20-1
2. Bellamentary, 6-1
3. Not Now Carolyn, 20-1
4. Songbird, 1-5
5. Coppa, 5-1
6. Kay Kay, 30-1
7. Sutton’s Smile, 20-1
Did you know?
The Summertime Oaks has a truly international history. From fourteen winners, the fillies have hailed from all around the world and have included horses bred in Great Britain, Ireland and Japan. Though it was not a Grade 1 race at the beginning in 2002, the inaugural installment was one of the most memorable. The legendary Bobby Frankel sent out the pint-sized and big-hearted Megahertz who kept her United States win streak intact with a win via disqualification after being bumped and struck with her opponent’s whip in the stretch. That thrilling race set the tone for what would become one of the most anticipated turf races of the summer, the Summertime Oaks.
