Delahoussaye Wins Pincay Jr. Award
Three-time Hollywood Gold Cup winning jockey Eddie Delahoussaye has been named as the tenth winner of the Laffit Pincay Jr. Award, presented annually to a person who has “served the sport with integrity, extraordinary dedication, determination and distinction.” The award will be presented on Hollywood Gold Cup Day, July 6, 2013. Pincay, himself a champion jockey and a member of the Racing Hall of Fame since 1975, will be on hand to present the award to Delahoussaye, who retired from riding in 2003.
Rider of record on super horse AP Indy
“Eddie is one of the very best jockeys I ever rode against and he was definitely the best I faced on horses that came from behind,’’ said Pincay when the award winner was announced. “If you heard him coming during a race, you knew you were in big trouble.” In addition to his Gold Cup wins, Delahoussaye also won two Kentucky Derbies, two Belmont Stakes, and one Preakness, as well as seven Breeders’ Cup World Championships races, including the 1992 BC Classic aboard superstar AP Indy, who he guided to four Grade I victories.
Fifth all-time in wins at Hollywood Park
A native of New Iberia, Louisiana, Delahoussaye won a total of 6,384 races over his career, one of only 17 jockeys to win more than 6,000 races. Almost one quarter of those wins came at Hollywood Park, where his total of 1,535 wins puts him fifth all-time for jockey wins at the historic track. Voted to the Hall of Fame in 1993, Delahoussaye is still active in racing as a breeder and owner. He’s also on the board of the Edward J Gregson Foundation, which develops programs to benefit backstretch workers and their families at California tracks.
