Grade II Los Alamitos Derby to Make History July 5
A new day dawns Saturday, July 5th when Los Alamitos Race Course will host the first graded stakes event in its history for thoroughbreds with the $500,000 mile and an eighth Grade II Los Alamitos Derby.
The undefeated Shared Belief, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer is the 4/5 morning line favorite and will be ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith. Shared Belief captured the Grade I Cash Call Futurity in December before a foot abscess derailed his Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown racing aspirations. He returned to the races in fine fashion with an allowance win May 26 at Golden Gate – his fourth win in as many starts.
Candy Boy back after rough trip in KY Derby
Like Shared Belief, Candy Boy (5/2 ML second choice) is a son of the successful stallion Candy Ride. The Los Alamitos Derby will mark Candy’s Boy’s first start since a 13th place finish in the Kentucky Derby where he was well-supported in the betting at 9/1 odds, but quickly lost his best chance in the race when has was roughed up just after leaving the starting gate and again before the first turn - essentially losing all chance.
Can the Man dangerous and improving for Baffert
The always dangerous Bob Baffert holds the wild card in the race with 6/1 ML choice Can the Man who has three wins in five lifetime starts including the Grade III Affirmed Stakes at Santa Anita June 7. In two previous stakes efforts Can the Man finished fourth in the Grade I FrontRunner at Santa Anita and third in the Grade I Del Mar Futurity during his two year-old season. In True Baffert style, his works for the Los Alamitos Derby are on the quick side.
