Historic 75th San Juan Capistrano Goes Sunday at Santa Anita
Long distance turf horses will be featured on Sunday at Santa Anita in the 75th running of the San Juan Capistrano Handicap, a Grade 2 event with a purse of $200,000. The prestigious race has drawn a competitive field of nine in the one and three-forth of a mile contest.
Carrying the high weight of 124 pounds is Lideris, a four-year-old son of Mizzen Mast who will be making his United States debut after competing primarily in Peru. The colt is a four-time winner and has been successful against Group 1 competition. Juan Enriquez will be aboard for Peter Miller and they have been tabbed at 8-1 on the morning line. Bred by Claiborne Farm, Lideris sold at Keeneland as a yearling in 2011 for $36,000.
Chilean Group 1 winner is the tabbed as the favorite
Quick Casablanca (CHI) has been installed as the heavy favorite at 8-5 on the morning line. Ridden by Joe Talamo for Ron McAnally, the Chilean-bred son of Until Sundown was last seen finishing third at Santa Anita in the Charlie Whittingham Stakes as the favorite. He was a Group 1 winner in Chile and Argentina and won the Grade 3 Last Tycoon Stakes in the United States in April.
Irish-bred with strong pedigree seeks first stakes score
Also in the field is the royally-bred Irish Surf, a son of Giant’s Causeway out of Eclipse Award winner Surfside. Trained by Dan Hendricks and ridden by Elvis Trujillo, the four-year-old colt has yet to hit the board from four starts this year and was last seen finishing fourth in the Charlie Whittingham. He is looking for his first stakes win and is 9-2 on the morning line.
