Hoppertunity Headlines Field for $200,000 San Pasqual
On Saturday at Santa Anita, the featured race is the 78th edition of the $200,000 San Pasqual Stakes. Scheduled to be run at a mile and a sixteenth on the main track, the Grade 2 race has drawn a field of eleven colts and geldings.
Hoppertunity tops the field as the morning line favorite at odds of 9-5 for trainer Bob Baffert. Purchased for $300,000 as a yearling, the four-year-old son of Any Given Saturday has won three of his seven career starts including two graded stakes. He was last seen defeating a field of eight in the Clark Handicap (G1) at Churchill Downs. He has been training steadily since that race and will have Martin Garcia back aboard from post position two.
Majestic Harbor trying to return to winning form
Second choice at 9-2 on the morning line is Majestic Harbor who is trying to rebound after finishing thirteenth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). A seven-year-old son of Rockport Harbor trained by Sean McCarthy, the six-time career winner was second in the 2014 edition of the San Pasqual (G2) and won two of his eight starts last year. Regular rider Tyler Baze will be aboard and they are scheduled to break from post position three.
Quadrivium making graded stakes debut
Also in the field at morning line odds of 8-1 is Quadrivium who will be making his first start against graded stakes competition for trainer Graham Motion. Bred and owned by Flaxman Holdings, the four-year-old son of Henrythenavigator began his career in Ireland and made his stateside debut in October at Keeneland. He is two for two in North America and won an optional claiming race at Laurel Park last time out. He will break from the rail under Mike Smith.
