La Tia Faces Seven Rivals in $300,000 Matriarch
On Sunday at Del Mar, the featured race is the 33rd edition of the $300,000 Matriarch. The Grade 1 race will be run at one mile on the turf and has drawn a field of eight fillies and mares.
La Tia has been named the favorite in the contentious field at morning line odds of 5-2 for trainer Armando De la Cerda. A five-year-old daughter of City Place, she has won nine times over the course of her career, three of which have come this year. A multiple graded stakes winner, she was last seen winning the Athenia (G3) at Belmont and has been training forwardly at Hawthorne Park since that race and will have Joel Rosario aboard from post three.
Discreet Marq back after runner-up finish in 2013 Matriarch
Second choice at 7-2 on the morning line is Discreet Marq, the runner-up in the 2013 running of the Matriarch. A four-year-old daughter of Discreet Cat trained by Christophe Clement, she has won seven of her nineteen starts including the Del Mar Oaks (G1). She was purchased for $2.4 million at the Fasig-Tipton sale in November and will be making her first start for Moyglare Stud. Irad Ortiz, Jr. will be in the irons from post position five.
Strathnaver (GB) trying to end career on a high note
Also in the field at 4-1 on the morning line is Strathnaver (GB) for trainer Graham Motion. A five-year-old daughter of Oasis Dream (GB), she has gone winless from six starts this year and was last seen getting moved up to second in the Goldikova (G2) at Santa Anita after a troubled trip. She has won five races throughout her career and the graded stakes winning mare will break from post position two under jockey Rafael Bejarano.
