Opening Day at Del Mar Features $100,000 Oceanside Stakes
In keeping with tradition, the Oceanside Stakes headlines Del Mars opening day card July 17 at the famed California track.
The $100,000 Oceanside, run at a mile on the turf course for three year-olds, features twelve runners and a lukewarm 7/2 favorite in Enterprising trained by Thomas Proctor. In seven career starts Enterprising has been a model of consistency finishing off the board just once – a seventh place finish in his debut. Since then, Enterprising placed third in the Grade III El Camino Real Derby and placed third again the La Puente Stakes in April at Santa Anita. In between those two efforts, Enterprising captured the Pasadena Stakes.
Lightly raced Texas Ryano looks live
The lightly raced Texas Ryano is the morning line second choice at 4/1 for trainer Carla Gaines. Texas Ryano took an allowance optional claiming race in April at Santa Anita and has a pair of wins in three career starts. Argyle Cut (9/2 ML), is considerably more experienced with nine career starts for trainer William Morey including a fine second place effort in the Singletary Stakes in June at Santa Anita.
Contention goes deep in strong betting race
The rest of the field is 8/1 or higher on the morning line in what appears to be an excellent betting race. The Oceanside has been run at Del Mar since 1975 with recent notable winners including Mr. Commons 2011 and Twirling Candy in 2010. In several instances the popularity of the race has caused it to be run in divisions.
