Reneesgotzip Zips to Del Mar Track Record
Once again, Reneesgotzip has proven that she actually has a lot – a lot of speed, that is. One of the quickest fillies on the West coast, the four-year-old daughter of City Zip was at it again this past weekend, when she won the Grade III Rancho Bernardo Handicap at Del Mar by setting a track record of 1:14.48 for 6 ½ furlongs, besting the previous mark set by Carlsbad in the 2009 Bernardo by nearly a half-second. She led wire-to-wire, finishing 4 ½ lengths ahead of Winding Way.
Second straight win at the Del Mar meet
Breaking sharply under Garret Gomez, Reneesgotzip opened up a lead of almost three lengths on the backstretch over Sweet Marini, getting the half-mile in 44.46. The field briefly closed on her coming out of the turn, but she was able to kick away again, and the result was never in doubt from mid-stretch on. After a six-month layoff following a second-place finish in the Grade I La Brea Stakes, this was Reneesgotzip’s second win in a row for 2013. She opened this year’s campaign at Del Mar with a 5 1/2 – length allowance score.
Racing toward the 2013 BC Championships
With this victory, Reneesgotzip runs her record to seven wins, three seconds and a third in 12 lifetime starts. That third place finish came last year when she took on the boys in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships Turf Sprint, and all indications are she’ll be back for the BC Championships this fall at Santa Anita, although it is unclear at this point whether she’ll go up against male sprinters or find a spot in one of the filly and mare races. All three of her second-place finishes have come in Grade I events.
