Rock Fall Heavily Favored in Grade 1 Vosburgh
The $400,000 Grade 1 Vosburgh September 26 at Belmont Park will feature top Breeders Cup Sprint challenger Rockfall against six rivals in a six furlong tilt on the main track.
Rockfall has earned world-class speed figures in his last two starts, dominating the Grade 2 True North Stakes June 5 at Belmont Park before returning to capture the Grade 1 Vanderbilt while locked in a heated battle with fellow Grade 1 winner The Big Beast August 1 at Saratoga. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Rockfall has captured 6 of 7 starts – and six in consecutive since finishing 8th in his debut. The son of 2004 Breeders’ Cup sprint winner Speightstown – also trained by Pletcher – is on track to duplicate his sire’s crowning achievement and already owns a win at Keeneland – the host track of the 2015 Breeders’ Cup. On paper, Rockfall is strictly the one to beat.
Salutos Amigos tries to get on track
Salutos Amigos (5/1) has been a consistent performer with 10 wins in 31 career starts, but will try to rebound after fourth and fifth-place finishes respectively in the Grade 1 Vanderbilt and Grade 1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga. The classy five year-old gelding will need a subpar effort from Rockfall to contend for the win, but has proven his mettle time and time again in graded stakes.
Palace has plenty of back class
At 8/1, Palace will also try to regain his form in the midst of a disappointing 2015 campaign. The Linda Rice trainee was a two-time grade 1 winner a year ago, but has run fifth and third in two starts this season.
