Runhappy Brilliant in Tuneup for the $1 Million Breeders' Cup Sprint
Runhappy, a top contender for the Breeders Cup Sprint (G1) which will be held on October 31 at Keeneland, turned in his fifth consecutive bullet workout on Wednesday, completing six furlongs in 1:09.80.
A three-year-old son of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, Runhappy was purchased for $200,000 as a yearling and has won five of his six starts. The rising star is trained by Maria Borell and his five victories are also the only five races she has won in her brief training career. Runhappy has been in training at Keeneland since September and has one win over the surface which came over a sloppy track in the Ogden Phoenix Stakes (G3) last time out.
Runhappy a rags to riches story
As a juvenile, Runhappy broke his maiden in his career debut in a green effort over ten rivals where he showcased his talent early. He stretched out to two turns after sprinting and took on stakes company in the LeComnte Stakes (G3) where he faltered and finished ninth, thus ending his future as a Triple Crown prospect. He won two starts against optional claiming company and then broke through and won the King’s Bishop Stakes (G1) in the biggest victory of his brief career.
Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) attracting tough field
The Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) is shaping up to be one of the deepest fields on the loaded Breeders’ Cup card. Runhappy will face a formidable rival in the form of Private Zone, the well-traveled gelding who is enjoying a career-best season as a six-year-old and has three victories from five starts, all against graded stakes competition. There is also the potential that he could face La Verdad, a talented New York bred mare who is undefeated from five starts this year.
