Songbird Towers Over Six Rivals in $400,000 Santa Anita Oaks
On Saturday at Santa Anita, all eyes will be on champion Songbird as she continues her road to the Kentucky Oaks (G1) in the Santa Anita Oaks (G1). The Grade 1 event will be contested at a mile and a sixteenth on the main track and has drawn a field of seven.
Songbird headlines the field as the overwhelming morning line favorite at odds of 1-9 for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. A dark bay daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, she is undefeated from six starts and completed her award winning season as a juvenile with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) over the highly regarded Rachel’s Valentina. She has won both starts convincingly as a sophomore and will break from the rail under regular rider Mike Smith.
Forever Darling trying to rebound back in California
Second choice at odds of 10-1 on the morning line is Forever Darling, one of two fillies in the race for trainer Richard Baltas. A chestnut daughter of Congrats, she has two wins from five starts and is trying to earn the second graded stakes win of her career. After winning the Santa Ynez Stakes (G2), she will be trying to rebound after finishing last in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes (G2). Martin Pedroza will be aboard and they will break from post position five.
Jade Princess needs to make a step forward
Also in the field at morning line odds of 20-1 is longshot Jade Princess for trainer Bob Baffert. A gray daughter of Tapit, she was purchased for $775,000 as a yearling and has two wins from six starts. She has been off the board behind Songbird in both recent starts and is trying to move forward and earn the first stakes win of her career. Victor Espinoza will be in the irons and they are scheduled to break from post three.
