Sophomore Fillies Square Off in $100,000 Dogwood Stakes
On Saturday at Churchill Downs, a field of ten sophomore fillies will compete in the $100,000 Dogwood Stakes. The Grade 3 race will be run at seven-furlongs on the main track, underneath the iconic Twin Spires.
Fiftyshadesofgold has been installed as the morning line favorite at odds of 2-1 for trainer William Bret Calhoun. The three-year-old daughter of My Golden Song was bred in Texas and has won four of her eight career starts. She was last seen finishing fourth, beaten a length, in the Test (G1) at Saratoga and will have Robbie Albarado, Jr. back aboard. She is going for her second graded stakes win and will break from post two.
Milam going for first graded stakes win
Second choice at odds of 7-2 is Milam who comes from the barn of Eddie Kenneally. A bay daughter of Street Sense, she was purchased for $95,000 at Keeneland as a yearling and has won three of her eight starts. In her most recent start, she was third in the Victory Ride (G3) and will have Corey Lanerie in the irons. Milam will break from post position four as she attempts to earn her first graded stakes win.
Bird Maker back home at Churchill Downs
Also in the field at odds of 6-1 is Bird Maker, a homebred for Marylou Whitney. Trained by Ian Wilkes, the bay daughter of Empire Maker is trying to rebound after finishing eighth in the Test (G1). She has won two of her eight outings, both of which have come at Churchill Downs. Shaun Bridgmohan, aboard for her maiden win, has been given the mount and they will break from post three.
