West Coast Invader Donworth Favored in $1.25 Million Charles Town Classic
On Saturday at Charles Town, the featured race is the $1.25 million Charles Town Classic. Scheduled to be run at a mile and an eighth, the Grade 2 race has attracted a field of ten colts and geldings with one other, Incremental, listed as an also-eligible.
Donworth has been tabbed as the morning line favorite at odds of 3-1 for trainer Doug O’Neill. A four-year-old son of Tiznow, he has been on the board in five of his six starts and is trying to earn the third win of his career. He is trying to rebound after a seventh-place finish in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) after being rank and difficult to handle early. Mario Gutierrez has retained the mount and they will break from post position four.
Imperative trying for repeat of 2014 CT Classic
Second choice at morning line odds of 7-2 is another West Coast invader, Imperative, for trainer Richard Baltas. A six-year-old son of Bernardini, the bay gelding has won three of his 30 starts and was the 2014 winner of the Charles Town Classic (G2). He was second in last year’s edition and is coming out of a third-place finish in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1). Mike Smith will be aboard and they will break from post position five.
Stanford looking for breakthrough win
Also in the field at morning line odds of 9-2 is Stanford for trainer Todd Pletcher. A four-year-old son of Malibu Moon, he was purchased for $550,000 as a juvenile and has been on the board in seven of his ten starts. He is trying to earn his first graded stakes victory and has been second in both starts so far this year, most recently the Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2). Javier Castellano will be aboard and they will break from post position seven.
